Day 3 -- Sunday 7/10/2011

Hobson, MT to Shelby, MT -- 179 miles

The day began with a quick breakfast of Cheerios and a fruit bar, then we broke camp and headed into Hobson for 8:30 am Mass at Sacred Heart Church. This tiny little church is a "mission" parish to the larger St Leo's Catholic Church in Lewistown. We were lucky to hit it on one of the alternate weeks (2nd and 4th weeks of the month) when they have Mass here. Being such a small town, there was only 30 or so people in attendance. This was the priest's first day serving this parish, so his serman was basically introducing himself to the people. Actually, he had served here twenty or so years ago, and some of the old timers knew him.

After Mass it was on the road again, still heading west on US 87 toward Great Falls. After a nice lunch of chicken fried steak, mashed potatos, and corn at a family restaurant, we merged onto I-15 and once again drove north to our destination for the day, Shelby, MT. We made a brief stop at the local Albertson's for a few supplies, then proceeded to the Lewis & Clark RV Park at the north edge of town. (As one can imagine, Lewis and Clark are big in these parts.)

This was a planned short drive day, so we arrived at about 1:30. We'll spend the rest of the afternoon catching up on the blog and planning our first day in Canada, which will be tomorrow. We may stay a day or so in or around Lethbridge -- Jeanette has been studying the guide books and says it looks like there's a lot to do. Since Lethbridge is the first town of consequence after crossing the border, I also want to stop at a bank and exchange some money so I'll have a few Canadian bucks for incidentals. And I want to stop at a phone store and see about getting either a SIM card for my GSM phone or perhaps a cheap pay-as-you-go phone for use while we're in Canada on both our up and back legs of the trip. The main thing is to see how the cost of either of those options compares to just paying the Verizon roaming charge on our normal phones. We do have Skype as a back-up, but that will only work when we have wi=fi service. Anyway, the main thing is that we'll be in Canada tomorrow morning.
